In preparation for the 2020 Yukon 1000, I spent some time searching through the archives for SPOT tracker data from previous races and assembling a potential GPS track from Dawson to Dalton Bridge, which I added to the end of a Yukon River Quest track that was built a similar way (but there is 100 times more data for the YRQ).
It may not be perfect, but it may be a help to somebody who gets to run the Yukon 1000 in the future. Unfortunately, we will be unlikely to use it now that the 2020 event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Google map above shows the aggregate data from all the SPOT tracks I could locate, as well as a candidate course through the various twists and turns of the river beyond Dawson.
There’s a backup link to the data here – since some browsers won’t display the Google Map.
You can export the main features and the tracks from that map as a KML file and load them into your GPS software.
There is also a PDF file which I’d assembled for the hardcopy map requirement. It’s 48 pages of A4 and includes the track as well as major features and checkpoints.
Caveat: All the data is based on SPOT tracks from previous years which were available online. We’ve never had the opportunity to actually paddle the course, so the track beyond Dawson is theoretical. If it helps, you’re welcome to use it. The author takes no responsibility for the quality of your adventure if the course proves to be wrong.
